The 2003 NBA Draft was one of the best, perhaps ever, and interestingly the Detroit Pistons chose Darko Milicic as the second overall pick and not Carmelo Anthony, who finished third. LeBron James, of course, was the first overall pick.
Melo recently talked about the fact that, after pursuing Darko, he ended up with the Denver Nuggets instead of the Pistons, a world-class team, admitting that he wanted to take on Milicic and prove Detroit wrong.
“I heard about Darko and the Detroit Pistons and immediately got ready to go there. I had to find out where he was training to track him down. Where were they hiding him? I asked myself. I went to all the gyms to find him. Yes, it’s a true story. I wanted to find him, beat him 1-on-1 and prove that I should have been the first choice of the Detroit Pistons.”, Anthony said, speaking on Dwayne Wade’s podcast.
The former Serbian player was not slow to respond.
“Still today you complain about something … What are you complaining about? You are third! What do you want? Are you out of your mind? Maybe if I had been third, I would still be playing and he would be picking apples“, Milicic said on the Jao Mile podcast to another former Serbian NBA player, Mile Ilic.
“I heard he was looking for me, but I didn’t see him; I have no idea. If he had wanted to, he would have found me; he knew where I was. These are their gangster stories, you know, like, ‘I was looking for him to show him.’ What do you want to show me? I felt that emotions got the better of him, he has to calm down now.”, concluded Darko Milicic on Carmelo Anthony.
