IN ITALY.

Italy has always been one of the favorite destinations of the Harlem Globetrotters. In our country so far more than 60 cities have been touched by the star-spangled tightrope walkers, and in each of them these athletes have left indelible memories. Still etched in the memory of fans remains the midnight party in the spectacular landscape of Capo d\’Orlando, or the cutting of the cake in downtown Naples among thousands of people, to the meeting with Pope Francis in 2016 on the occasion of the team\’s 90th anniversary. The way these American champions experience Sports goes far beyond the simple athletic gesture.

The global mission of the Harlem Globetrotters is first and foremost to bring a smile to people\’s faces. A message of hope born on the playing field to be taken outside as well, to hospitals, schools and among people in need. In Italy, too, the Globes have been protagonists of gestures of solidarity, such as when they visited the tent cities of L\’Aquila after the 2009 earthquake in Abruzzo, or on the occasion of visits to pediatric cancer wards in the hospitals of Genoa and Ferrara. In the most recent Italian tours, the two Visit Trainings at the home of Juventus in 2018 and Inter in 2019 have also remained famous, up to the participation in the Festival dello Sport in Trento, a prestigious international event in Trentino with the participation of the greatest personalities in the world of Sport in which the legendary coach of the Harlem Globetrotters, Sweet Lou Dunbar, among others, took part.

LEGENDS

The Harlem Globetrotters (literally the \”globetrotters of Harlem,\” the African-American neighborhood of New York City) are the world\’s most famous entertainment basketball team, a legend. A dream team of formidable basketball players that combines superb technique, athleticism and great entertainment. Born in Chicago in 1926 from an idea of promoter Abe Saperstein, when black players were not accepted on U.S. professional league teams, the Globes\’ franchise has over the years modified its style of play to the more circus-like and spectacular form of basketball that distinguishes it today, turning its champions into true showmen. Elected to the prestigious \”Basketball Hall of Fame,\” in nearly a century of history the Harlem Globetrotters have crossed sports boundaries with selflessness and irony, breaking down cultural and social barriers through their smiles and an unwavering message of peace and hope.

Promoters of world peace and brotherhood, as well as advocates of human rights, the Globes have in fact always considered social engagement a priority in their mission, repeatedly diluting political and even military tensions of an international nature with their simple good works. These heroes of American and world sports have included such celebrated Nba champions as Earvin \”Magic\” Johnson, Reece \”Goose\” Tatum, Jamario Moon, the late Meadowlark Lemon and a true basketball legend like Wilt \”The Stilt\” Chamberlain.
