An NBA G League player from New York was shot and severely injured by a stray bullet outside a bar in Philadelphia’s Olney neighborhood on Sunday, according to reports from 6abc.com. Authorities arrived at the 5th Street Lounge around 12:45 p.m. and found Terry Roberts, a 23-year-old Long Island Nets guard, shot in the upper chest.
Roberts had traveled to Philadelphia over the weekend to do a favor for a friend. The two stopped at the bar and at that moment experienced a street shooting from inside, and a bullet struck Roberts. It was close at first, but now doctors say Roberts will survive. They took him off life support and he was able to talk to his parents on Monday.
“He is healing.”, Roberts’ mother said. “She is fine. He is in shock. It is a traumatic situation that happened.”
Four suspects fled in a gray Nissan Altima. According to authorities, an off-duty security guard fired at the fleeing car.
“It was tough.”, said Terrace Roberts, Terry’s father. “An avalanche of emotions, inner pain and coping.”
Both the shooting and the off-duty guard are being investigated.
