When it comes to the NBA All-Star Game, defense is often considered a mere option for players. That was the case again Sunday night at the NBA All-Star Game 2024 in Indiana. One did not even need to watch the game to draw the conclusion that the concept of defense once again suffered its death in the annual event. You can read it in the score, as the East defeated the West by a score of 211-186 (not a typo).
And once again, fans and observers gathered on social media to criticize Sunday’s All-Star Weekend competition.
“The biggest enemy of the All-Star Games is simply the money the players make. They don’t want to get hurt. So they don’t get busy. The result is a terrible product.”, said Darren Rovell.

“I think I’m officially an old man. The All-Star Game is absolute crap.”, shared @bjvanbeek.
At least one fan even quoted a classic quote from Los Angeles Lakers legend and basketball Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant about the NBA All-Star Game.
“The All-Star Gameneeds a little revamping. It used to be competitive. People want to see the best players in the world really going up against each other … not running up and down dunking without defense.”.

The Eastern All-Stars were led by Damian Lillard, who scored 39 points and won the Best Player award at the 2024 NBA All-Star Game. Five players also scored at least 30 points. But Lillard was not even the game’s top scorer. That was Minnesota Timberwolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns, who scored 50 points in a game the West team lost.
