Lakers move: Pat Beverley returns to L.A.

The Los Angeles Lakers have just completed a trade! But not one involving Russell Westbrook. According to various reports, the Lakers will acquire veteran Patrick Beverley from the Utah Jazz in exchange for Talen Horton-Tucker and Stanley Johnson. This is a set of trades, so no future draft picks will be included. Only these 3 players are involved.

THT + Johnson seems a lot for Beverley, at least at first glance. Of course, it is possible-and Lakers fans hope-that other moves are in the works, possibly involving Westbrook. The Lakers have freed up an extra roster spot-they now have two openings-and potentially crucial cap room for next summer.

The Jazz were often mentioned as plausible buyers for Russ (only to cut him immediately) during the off season as they appear to be on the verge of total rebuilding and are trying to get veteran salaries off their backs. The Lakers are looking for depth and spacing, so the prospect of trading Westbrook (and, ideally, zero picks) for a combination of Beverley, Mike Conley Jr., Bojan Bogdanovic and/or Malik Beasley might make sense. Let’s see if this trade is really the appetizer for what will happen in the coming weeks.
