Friday night the Los Angeles Lakers won the penultimate game of their regular season at home of the Memphis Grizzlies: 120-123. It was a more balanced contest than might have been expected, as Memphis had as many as 13 absences and thus sent a roster of comprimarios and G-Leaguers to the court. It took 6 consecutive points by LeBron James, including a spectacular dunk, to get the better of the Grizzlies in the finale and secure eighth place.
In the past few hours, however, the NBA has admitted a error in the management of the stopwatch by the referees. During the third period, after a break, the stopwatch was erroneously increased to 2:20 instead of the 1:14 that was actually missing. According to the NBA, teams and referees did not realize this in time to remedy it. The result then was that the Lakers and Grizzlies played 1 minute and 6 seconds more than the canonical 48′.
The game, which ended in regulation, actually lasted 49.06 minutes: probably a record for a match without extra time.
