Bruce Brown was the best player Indiana gave up to the Toronto Raptors In the trade for Pascal Siakam. The guard, who won the NBA title last year with the Nuggets while playing a key role, could leave as early as the next few weeks but in the meantime has quickly settled into the Canadian locker room. As reported by TSN’s Josh Lewenberg, Brown said he paid Jontay Porter $10,000 to “buy” his jersey number: the #11.
Brown wore #11 in both Denver and Indiana, whereas before the Nuggets, when he played for the Brooklyn Nets, he wore 1. The negotiation with Porter, if you can call it that, was easier than expected thanks to an exceptional intermediary: Michael Porter Jr., Jontay’s brother and former partner of Bruce Brown in Denver. Afterward, the newcomer directly asked how much he would have to pay to get #11: “I thought he would ask me more.” commented the player.
Then again, money is hardly an issue for Brown, who signed a two-year, $45 million total deal last summer.
Bruce Brown said he reached out to his former Nuggets teammate Michael Porter Jr. to ask if brother Jontay would be willing to give up jersey No. 11. “I make enough to try to bribe him a little bit.”
How much did it cost? “$10K”
“I thought he was going to ask for more.”
