Marcus Smart was traded while he was sleeping. The player revealed that he started crying after being traded from Boston to Memphis.
Speaking on the Chris Vernon Show, the 29-year-old shared that he was woken up by his girlfriend, who told him he had been traded. Previously, Smart had fallen asleep with the news that a trade for Malcolm Brogdon was being finalized.
The deal eventually fell through and it was Smart who was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. The guard admitted to crying after being traded.
“I cried. I cried — I cried because of the special relationships I have with the guys. I grew up with Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, and I hoped to stay my whole career with them. With all those guys, even Al Horford.”
“A lot of those guys, when my mother died, they were there. They had a hard time with me, so it was hard.” shared Smart.
However, the guard is now excited to begin a new chapter in his basketball career and feels he has already achieved what he could with the Boston Celtics.
