Victor Wembanyama was a phenomenon during his rookie season with the San Antonio Spurs. To end the year, the Spurs superstar talked about a range of topics. From his defensive prowess to what he learned most in a rookie season in the NBA that saw his team lose 60 out of 82 games, through other topics, including Wembanyama’s quote against Wilt Chamberlain, according to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer.
Wembanyama also invoked the legendary Wilt Chamberlain during the interview. It is a part of the conversation that may have been overlooked in the annals of social media. The generational talent empathized with another giant of the game (in stature and status) by talking about why some offensive moves prove more challenging than others.
“You know Wilt Chamberlain was terrible at the free, while he was great at hook shots and finger rolls.” Wembanyama said. “Because he had no momentum and he was so tall, he was a disaster at free throws. I felt that way too because there are so many things to do with such a small basketball.”
It is a statement that gives a glimpse into a world few people know about, even in a league that hosts and has hosted the best basketball players ever.
