For a few years now, there has been talk of a possible revolution in theAll Star Game, which no longer entertains as much as it used to because of a diminishing competitiveness. It will be the task of Adam Silver find a way to breathe new life into an event that has always been central to the NBA world, as the request made to the players to try harder was not enough.
Among the many ideas that have circulated in recent months has been that of, simply, paying players extra to make it a competitive game. An avenue that does not seem to be warming up too much at the moment. Silver, speaking on CNN, admitted that one option on the table is to move from an all-star game between players from the Eastern and Western Conference to a game between U.S. and international players.
That such a change would increase competitiveness is obviously not a given, but it might whet the players’ pride to somehow assert the supremacy of their own basketball over that of the opponent. In this way we would have a lineup with the various LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, etc. against a team surely led by Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic, but not only.
But Silver also admitted. maybe we are past the time when All Star Weekend should be a competitive event, taking the example of the challenge between Curry and Sabrina Ionescu, which was probably the most interesting challenge this year: “Maybe we need to experiment with new things, make the All Star Weekend a real celebration of basketball. We will also think about the option of playing USA vs. Internationals.”.
“We’re going to look at USA vs. International. I just think maybe we’re past that point where we’re going to play a truly competitive game.”
