According to the Associated Press, Embiid is considering playing for France at the 2023 World Cup or the 2024 Olympics. Joel Embiid, born in Cameroon, holds French citizenship as well as American citizenship.

He is also considering playing for Team USA. He recently obtained American citizenship. Joel Embiid played high school basketball in Florida for both Montverde Academy and The Rock School. He attended the University of Kansas for one year before declaring himself selectable for the NBA Draft.

Should the Sixers star decide to play for France, he may not be the only major addition to the national team as Victor Wembanyama may also decide to play in the World Cup and/or Olympics.

Embiid and Wembanyama would join a French national team that won a silver medal at the 2021 Olympics and a silver at EuroBasket 2022. The roster includes current NBA players Rudy Gobert, Evan Fournier and Nicolas Batum, with former NBA Boris Diaw as the team\’s general manager.
