Tragedy in Belgrade, Luka Doncic will pay for victims’ funerals

Yesterday the city of Belgrade was shocked by the massacre that took place in a school, where one of the pupils, aged 14, showed up armed, opening fire on fellow students and killing eight children and a janitor. All of Serbia was shocked by the news and tonight’s match, Game-4 between Partizan Belgrade and Real Madrid, was at risk of postponement. Sasha Djordjevic, former coach of Serbia, was among those who most advocated for postponing the match given the circumstances, but was not heard. Luka Doncic wanted to do things differently: as reported by ESPN, the Slovenian, with his Luka Doncic Foundation, has offered to pay for the funerals of all victims involved.

Doncic is Slovenian but has significant Serbian ancestry on his father Sasha’s side. A grandmother, two uncles, and a younger cousin live of the Mavericks superstar currently live in Serbia. It is clear, therefore, that Doncic felt the grief particularly close and, given the large financial resources and the work of his Foundation, he did not hesitate to come to the aid of the families in this tragedy.

“I am heartbroken by the tragic shooting that took place in Serbia and the loss of so many lives, including those of innocent children. My thoughts are with the families and the entire community affected by this tragedy.” – Doncic wrote on social – “Belgrade, I support you and stand by your side during this very ugly time. Through the Luka Doncic Foundation I am looking for short and long-term ways to help the students, facilities and families affected by the shooting at Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School.”.
