The Antetokounmpo brothers’ absurd childhood: “We had to run for fear they would kill us in the street.”

The brothers’ story Antetokounmpo has the unbelievable. Starting from a situation of extreme hardship, they have risen to the top of the basketball world, especially in terms of Giannis.

The Bucks phenomenon and its siblings grew up in Greece in a very difficult social environment. Kostas, currently at Panathinaikos, told a very sad detail about his childhood.

In Greece immigrants are treated much worse than in other places. When we were on the streets, Giannis and Thanasis used to tell me and my brother Alex to run. They did this to get us home sooner and reduce the risk of something happening to us. I thought it was a game but inside I was afraid, really afraid that at any moment someone would pop up to attack and kill us.

Kostas talked about this in the documentary dedicated to his brother, Giannis: The Marvelous Journey, released a few days ago on Prime Video and also taken up by Basketball Chronicles. Another docu-film, Rise, dedicated to the entire Antetokounmpo family, was made in 2022.
