After missing out on a medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, the U.S.A. wants to bounce back next summer. With a host of stars rumored to be interested in participating in the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Team USA also hopes to lure Joel Embiid, center for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Embiid has options for next summer if he decides to participate in the rainbow event. The Cameroonian holds citizenships from the United States and France. Rudy Gobert, Evan Fournier, Nicolas Batum and company lost in the group stage after defeats to Canada and Latvia.
LeBron James has already talked to superstars such as Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and Jayson Tatum to do so, according to Shams Charania and Joe Vardon of The Athletic. These efforts could extend to Joel Embiid because he could be very beneficial to Team USA.
“The prospect of convincing reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid to A.) play in an international tournament; and B.) do so for Team USA instead of Team France, remain alive.”, writes The Athletic.
Let’s see if the Cameroonian will really succumb to the Americans’ enticements. He probably feels more American than French, since he has been playing in the NBA for several years. In France at most he went there on vacation, he has no particular direct links with Paris. Although representing the home team in the Olympics is always something nice.
