REVOLUTION in the NBA Draft: here’s what will change in 2024 and why

Starting next June, the NBA Draft will be spread over two nights, with the first round on Wednesday (presumably June 26) and the second round the following night, pending approval by the National Basketball Players Association, as reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. (Officially, the 2024 NBA Draft is currently scheduled for June 27, four days after a potential Game 7 of the NBA Finals.).

NBA commisioner Adam Silver more than hinted at this change in an interview with SiriusXM NBA in December.

“We’re working on it.”, Silver said. “It’s something we have to continue to work on with our networks, ESPN and ABC, who broadcast the draft, and of course with the players’ association. But I would like to say, having been the deputy commisioner in the past, in the role that Mark Tatum is in now, that this is not about Mark Tatum needing sleep, but to me it seems unfair to the second-round players that we are still on at 12:30 a.m. or whatever time in the morning, East Coast time, to pick second-round players.” Adam Silver said a few weeks ago regarding the change in format of the NBA Draft.
