A shot of depth was needed to lift the fortunes of a so far lackluster season, and here comes coach Messina is ready to welcome Rodney McGruder to Olimpia EA7 Milan.
American Play/Guard, class of 1991, 195 cm, free agent since the beginning of the season after playing the pre-season with Golden State Warriors but not convincing coach Kerr to guarantee him a place in the rotation.
The Kansas University product made his NBA debut in 2016 with the home Miami Heat, playing three seasons with decent minutes, 5.6 average guaranteed by a 43% from two and 36% from beyond the arc. In the 2018/2019 season he was demoted to the G-LEAGUE with the Sioux-Falls Skyforce (the HEAT’s satellite team) putting up 1091 points in 161 games.
In 2019/2020 he wears the Clippers jersey maintaining, roughly, the numbers of his previous experience in Florida and from 2020 he moves to Detroit where he remains until the end of the 22/23 season, traveling at an average of 15 minutes of employment and 4.7 points per game.
McGruder lengthens the White and White exterior package, already boosted by the graft of Napier – who has certainly shifted something in the EA7 offensive mechanisms – and the recovery of Billy Baron, absolute protagonist of last season.
Excellent skills in 1 vs. 1 and a very educated hand from the arc, he will immediately try to raise the bar of Milan’s ambitions, still in the running for a place in the Euroleague play-in.
Waiting for the official announcement on Olimpia’s website, we welcome Rodney to Italy!
