After an illustrious decades-long career between Europe and the NBA, Marc Gasol has officially retired from basketball. The 39-year-old center held a special press conference in his hometown of Barcelona, where he officially announced his retirement. Gasol began his career playing for FC Barcelona. Symbolically, he decided to end his journey in the same city.
During his 20-year career, Gasol became an NBA champion (2019), NBA Defensive Player of the Year (2013), a three-time All-Star (2012, 2015, 2017) and a member of the All-NBA First Team (2015).
Gasol has won two FIBA World Championship gold medals with the Spanish national team (2006, 2019), five medals at EuroBasket (gold – 2009, 2011; silver – 2007; bronze – 2013, 2017) and two Olympic silver medals (2008, 2012).
After his NBA career, where he played for the Memphis Grizzlies – like his brother Pau -, the Toronto Raptors and the Los Angeles Lakers, Gasol returned to his native Spain to help Girona advance in Spain’s top basketball competition, the Liga Endesa (ACB).
We are really very happy to have been able to enjoy a phenomenon like Marc Gasol and we are quite sure that we will hear more about the former Girona center in the basketball world.
