Lakers, Jeanie Buss on Westbrook: ‘The best of last year’ – but then reconsiders

Curious interview by Jeanie Buss with Sam Amick of The Athletic.

The owner of the Los Angeles Lakers described his team’s prospects for the upcoming season, focusing mainly on Russell Westbrook, LeBron James, and the newly acquired Patrick Beverley.

In particular, Buss pointed out. Westbrook as “best player of last season” for the yellowviola. But then, before the interview was published, the correction: “I should have used the word ‘continuous’ because he played 78 games,” he corrected.

Subsequently the owner of the Lakers spoke about Beverley’s arrival, “When we got Matt Barnes, it was thought that he couldn’t get along with Kobe, and instead it worked out great. He and Westbrook can also play together, Pat was taken because of his defensive skills, because he’s someone who pushes his teammates to the highest level, he’s a locker room leader, he leads by example, the day after signing he was already here training.”

Finally, a passage on the renewal of LeBron James: “Last February we talked, he is a winner and he wants to be put in a position to succeed. Me, Pelinka and the rest of the front office are in charge of that, we reassured him and he gave us confidence. He extended with us even though he could wait; it is an important investiture. For us, his renewal was a priority, also for the Lakers brand it is critical for LBJ to close his career here.”
