Victor Wembanyama played arguably the best game of his short NBA career on Friday, giving the San Antonio Spurs a thrilling overtime victory over the New York Knicks thanks to a career-high of 40 points, 20 rebounds and 7 assists with 13 of 22 from the field and 4 of 9 from three. The French phenom became the first rookie to accumulate 40 points and 20 rebounds in a single game since Shaquille O’Neal back in 1992.
Before Wembanyama etched his name next to O’Neal’s in the NBA record books, however, his singular feats on the court drew comparisons to another all-time great. In the latest episode of KG Certified, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Boston Celtics legend, Kevin Garnett, invoked Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry, talking about how Wembanyama is creating a new mold for big men.
“Wemby looks crazy, man. Remember when Steph Curry started shooting from really far away and everyone was like super oooh and aaah?”. Kevin Garnett told co-host and former Celtics teammate Paul Pierce about Wembanyama and Curry. “Brother, he brought a different mix and a different effect to the center. Not only does he move and grow the game, but he makes the five look almost like a three. Wemby is almost KD in the five, bro. I swear. If you’re in the five position and you can’t slide and you can’t move your feet and be dynamic, it’s going to be difficult, bro.”.
Buckle up. Wemby’s lifting off. 🚀
Even with the lofty expectations, @KevinGarnett5KG is floored by what he’s seeing from @wemby In his rookie year. Cheers, Victor. 🫡
