James Harden exercises player option — and prepares to leave Philadelphia

The endless spread of rumors about whether James Harden will stay with the Philadelphia 76ers or rejoin the Houston Rockets is almost over. The 33-year-old has now made a decision but his future is still fraught with question marks.

Harden has exercised his $35.6 million player option, although the two sides will work together on a trade, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

“JUST IN: James Harden has exercised his $35.6 million player option for next season so the 10-time All-Star and the 76ers can work together on a trade that would take him away from Philadelphia.”

Last season was very promising for Harden, who led the NBA with 10.7 assists per game and averaged 21 points.

Despite being among the best players to reach free agency, his market consists of a few teams now that the Sixers have decided to unload him: the Houston Rockets, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers.

The Texans have a lot of young guys, and a returning veteran like James Harden could help them grow and become competitive as quickly as possible. The other two teams need superstars to improve.
