It has been an incredibly bad week for the Porter family. Michael Porter Jr. has 4 brothers (and 3 sisters): Jontay, Coban, Izaak and Jevon. If the first on this list a few days ago was disqualified for life by the NBA for a betting scandal, including on his own games, Coban got even worse. Today he received news of the sentencing for a case of vehicular homicide: was sentenced to 6 years in prison.
The facts date back to January 22, 2023, in Denver, when. Coban Porter burned a red light by colliding with the Tesla driven by Kathy Rothman, 42, an Uber driver. Also riding in Rothman’s vehicle was another passenger, an Uber customer, who was severely injured. Following tests conducted after the accident, Porter was driving under the influence of alcohol.
Jason Branch, the injured person, and the Rothman family filed suit against both Coban and the Crimson and Gold Tavern, the bar that continued to serve him alcohol despite the fact that he was visibly drunk.
“All I can say is that I’m sorry, I hope that somehow I can make a difference.” commented Coban Porter after the sentencing. Also present at the sentencing was Michael Porter Jr: “Coban was my inspiration in basketball, it’s not often you look up to a younger brother. When they called us after the incident we were all afraid that he was the victim.”.
Coban Porter had plea-bargained for an 8-year sentence, but the judge eventually decided to split it into two: a 6-year and a 2-year sentence, but these will be served concurrently.
