Panathinaikos Athens coach Ergin Ataman described some of the differences between playing in the NBA and in the EuroLeague, which he believes are related to Juancho Hernangomez’s difficult adaptation to the team. Hernangomez is playing in the EuroLeague for the first time in his career after 7 years in the NBA.
Here is what Ergin Ataman had to say about the NBA after his team’s victory over Real Madrid:
“Hernangomez is a player who has some problems and the problem with these kinds of players coming from the NBA is that they play fewer minutes there and they don’t have any kind of responsibility. In the EuroLeague it is sometimes a problem. Not only for Juancho, but for many players like him. He has a very good character and works hard, but sometimes he makes crucial mistakes in the game. I think he needs to improve some things, because he is a quality player and very good in the fundamentals. But he needs to be maybe stronger to be competitive in the aggressiveness and tough defense he finds in the EuroLeague. As I have said many times: the EuroLeague is an aggressive game from the first to the last minute of the game. The NBA is not like that. In the NBA, in the first three quarters, the game is very soft. They start playing in the last quarter.”
