Brittney Griner’s ordeal continues: detention in Russia extended by another 6 months

New updates came in today on Brittney Griner, the WNBA star who was arrested last February in Russia and has since been locked up in jail awaiting trial. The Phoenix Mercury center had been caught at the airport in possession of cannabis oil for her electronic cigarette, something considered cunningly serious enough to open a case and carry more weight in international geopolitics. It was a rumor a few weeks ago that Russia had proposed to exchange Griner for an arms dealer detained in the United States.

But the latest news is not at all positive. The start of the trial, in which Griner will face up to 10 years in prison for “drug trafficking,” is set for July 1. But in the meantime, the detention has been extended by another 6 months..

Brittney Griner, 31, won the women’s Euroleague four times with the Ekaterinburg Russians, but in this affair she is nothing more than a pawn in the hands of Putin and his regime to keep the US in check, at least minimally.
