The closing of the Sabarimala temple takes place after the Athazha Pooja (the night pooja) on the last day that is on 14th Jan. Previously, Kalababhishekam is performed to cool the deity which would have gone through numerous abhishekams for God Ayyappa. No abhishekam is conducted after this ritual. Then the idol of Lord Ayyappa is covered with Bhasmam or holy ashes and a silk turban are placed on the top of the idol in Sabari temple.
Another popular mythology belief for Makara Jyothi is that the Makara Vilakku is lit there in recognition of the Aarathi performed by Dev rishis and Devas at the season of disclosure of His Divine structure (Roopa) by Manikantan (an incarnation of Sasta)
